Port Orford Series

Artist Statement

The dock at Port Orford is unique, being one of only six ports in the world that hoists ships out of the water and stores them on custom-built trailers. A visit to the dock, which is open to the public, is a rich experience. As a photographer, I find this environment full of opportunities to record the “stories” of the ships’ chaffed, patina-ed hulls and rudders; abstract shapes emerge as nautical narratives and I wonder if this happens as a result of environment, mindset, or both. I have always been drawn to Modern Art, and abstractions in particular. This body of work allows the sea to suggest its own narrative.
